Shrove Tuesday is the last day before Lent which is a Christian festival.
Lent is a period of abstinence, so Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to indulged yourself and to use up the foods that aren’t allowed in Lent.
Back in the day pancakes were eaten on this day because they contain fat, butter and eggs which were not allowed during Lent, where as today people tend to just give something up for lent such as children are likely to say they will give up sweets or crisp.
